Unlucky bamboo & mean looking spider

When I moved into my new home I went to Ikea to get some basic things and while I was there I also got a lucky bamboo (well that is what Ikea called it). Afer about 2 weeks though, my lucky bamboo died!! Im not sure if I should take it is a bad omen, but its very typical of me. I can't even keep a stick plant alive :/ And if this wasn't bad enought I discovered a mean looking spider in my window (on the outside). I had a close look at it and to my relief there were no spcific sign on its back like a cross (!), but Im in Australia, so who knows what the little critter is capable of?! At the moment Im leaving it alone tho, I dont want to risk becoming enemies with is spider relatives :)

Well, enough about bad signs. It's easter now and Im having a holiday, in which I basically have to work with school stuff anyway, but at least I can sleep in and take some days off. After my little crisis the other day I guess Im feeling better. It is still a bit overwhelming all the stuff we need to get done, but at least im not alone in panicking about it.

Last night I went to the cinema with Carolyn, one of the girls in my class, her boyfriend Barry and Truls the Norwegian guy. We saw Bad Education by Pedro Almodovar. It was a great movie, quite graphic, but good story and really nice filming!

Today..well I just got up, so not much to say about today yet. The weather looks good, but its not very warm. The weather forecast says a high of 20. So just like a Norwegian summer day :)

Some of the strret-art outside my door :)

Crisis

Today I was seconds away from withdrawing from the course! It just seemed so pointless coming to the other side of the world to be stuck night and day in a room working like mad. Of course I came here mainly to study, but I do need a social life too and I would like to see a bit of Australia while Im here.

At the moment I have neither money nor time to do anything else apart from the odd movie. So this morning I went into uni to check what possibilities I had if I wanted to quit. It turned out that I would loose half my money if I left now, so then that was obviously out of the question. I was then able to talk to one of or lecturers. She understood my stressful situation and could only confirm that this course is really hard and that every year some students freak out, both due to the workload and the money situation. So it wasn't a very comforting chat, but she told me I should come and see her next week and she would help me out with how to better work efficiently on the projects, so I hopefully can get some spare time. Apparently they put on this heavy work load to imitate a real working situation!! So juhu...I have something to look forward to!

I guess Im just having a bad day. After 2 weeks of insane stress, with both me and my computer getting sick and no real friends around to talk to, I guess it was just a bit too much. I will probably feel better in a few days. At least they figured out what was wrong with my laptop...something in the motherboard! Funny, my last computer also had a faulty motherboard when I bought it!? Weird! And I finally have internet at home :)) Jippi:) That helps a lot. I can work much better at home than at school, so this should make a huge difference in my school work!

Ok, enough dreary stuff. I have had some good days too :) Last sunday Carolyn, an Australian girl in my class invited me over for dinner. She is married to a Dutch guy, Barry. They are both travel addicts..hehe so we have a lot in common. They are really nice people and Barry made great seafood caserolle thing. There was also a food & wine festival in the city, so I met up with Truls, a Norwegian guy who studies IT at Monash. We strolled around the city for a while looking at various food things. In the evening we saw 'Aquatic Life' which was a kind of odd movie. Not sure what to think of it yet. Both good and weird in a sense!

Yup, that was all for now. However will probably update more frequently now that I have internet at home :) Happy easter!

Oh my Gooooooooood!

If anyone is wondering, yes Im still alive..barely...we have had an insane amount of work the last couple of weeks! Even the Australian students who have 3 years experience in this area were stressed out. That made me even more stressed. I worked half the night almost every day for the last week to make it. Still I didn't have time to do it all properly. We had 2 big projects to hand in and at the same time present them to the class/teachers. The first one was about branding. We have to either rebrand an exiciting company or invent a new brand. We were split in two groups during the presentations and all the experienced students did their presentations first. That was a depressing experience. They were all really professional in all they did, layout, design, what they had covered etc...I felt like digging myself a hole in the ground. What I had done seemed completely meaningless compared to their stuff. Luckily (I guess) the other post. grad. students were also feeling like me and we were all in the same boat. We had all misunderstood the scope of the presentation. At least now we know what to do next time. We will also have time to redo out existing thing before the final deadline in June, which is good.

The other project is about typography and layout. We are designing an annual report, but before we can do any design we had to reasearch about typography, write an essay and analyse 5 different reports. Luckily this went a bit better since I had devouted most of my time to this project. It is hard to juggle it all, when they are both due on the same time. Anyway, it was a great relief to have finished that first phase. Now we have a few days rest before the projects continues. So I am trying to use this time to catch up on things, like writing emails and updating this blog.

For those who think im splurging around on the beach in the sun, think again. There are no beaches for swimming nearby, the weather is often very cold and even if there was a beach I have been locked up in my room with work more or less since university started so I wouldn't have had the time to go there anyway.

Im glad I had those weeks in Thailand before I came, so at least I got enough of the beach for a while :)

In one week, we have easter holiday, that will be good. I first planned to go to Tasmania, but realised that I need to use some of my holiday on schoolwork. The other problem is that things are extremely expensive here. Almost like Norway. The only cheap thing is alcolhol! So I decided to save the money and hopefully I can travel during my "winter" holiday in June instead.

Im trying to think what else I've actually done...yes, I went and saw a dance/theatre performance one evening (part of research for the annual report since im doing the report for the Arts Centre). The performance was called Passion and was performed by an American dance company called Momix. It was really amazing.

Passion features five movers – rather than dancers because the movement lexicon employs suspended ropes, knee pads, props, and each other – moving to or along with music composed by Peter Gabriel for the Martin Scorsese film, The Last Temptation of Christ.

Pub crawl, Grand Prix and rain!

Finally I have time to write a few words. Today it is saturday and im at school!! Not having classes though, but since I have no internet where I live (I will hopefully get it in a few weeks) I have to go here to use the free network.

Im still as busy as last time, but feel that Im starting to catch up a bit. Im not the only person feeling out of league though, so it seems like they will put together a workshop for all the students who come from other diciplines (most of us on post graduate come from areas like webdsign, fine art/teaching, interior design og industrial design). Some of the processes and software in graphic design is a bit different and we need to learn it to be able to do the assignments we have got.

Apart from school I havent had time for much else. Yesterday ANSA (The Norwegian student organistation) organised a pub crawl, so I went to that. Until now I thought I was one of the few Norwegians around since I only seen 3 of them since i arrived. That was of course a huge mistake. At first we werent that many, but as we went along the pub route more and more people came. I lost count after a while. I assumed a huge part of them where Australians joining our pub crawl, however it turned out that most of them were Swedish!
Anyway, it was fun meeting some other Scandinavians, although im probably 10 years older than most of them :o Im trying to keep that a secret though ;)

By the way it is the Grand Prix (the car race thing) here now. All day long all I hear is the sound of speeding cars...eeeeeeeeeiiiiii ( or however one spells that sound)

It is also cold and raining like crazy today. Brrrrrrrr.... Have I mentioned the freak weather they have here? One day it is 33 degrees, next day it feels like 10, then it gets hot again, rain, hot, cold etc....like Crowded House sings in "Four seasons in one day": (They are apparently from Melbourne)

Four seasons in one day
Lying in the depths of your imagination
Worlds above and worlds below
The sun shines on the black clouds hanging over the domain

Even when you’re feeling warm
The temperature could drop away
Like four seasons in one day

Smiling as the shit comes down
You can tell a man from what he has to say
Everything gets turned around
And I will risk my neck again, again

You can take me where you will
Up the creek and through the mill
All the things you can’t explain
Four seasons in one day

Blood dries up
Like rain, like rain
Fills my cup
Like four seasons in one day

It doesn’t pay to make predictions
Sleeping on an unmade bed
Finding out wherever there is comfort there is pain
Only one step away
Like four seasons in one day

Blood dries up
Like rain, like rain
Fills my cup
Like four seasons in one day

Swamped

Hi there, if anyone is wondering if I am still alive: I am :) But I am absolutely swamped with work and have been superbusy everyday. Some good news though. I have found a place to live. The area looks a bit dodgy, but is actually quite good and very central. Ill post a couple of pictures. I share a house with four people around 20 years old. Two Malaysian girls, Yin & Yan (sisters), studying multimedia and industrial design, an Australian guy, Ryan, studying aviation and an Australian girl, Lucy who studies PR. We are all at the same university which is good. Anyway got to go no..no internet at the house yet, so hooked up at an internet place across the road, tryingto get some research for school done. Here are some pics of my room and the area around :) ok..pics are too big..ill fix later ...must run, they are closing up here :)
